Vleeshal Middelburg

TGMFS draait om twee hoofdthema’s. Enerzijds verkent de tentoonstelling het menselijk lichaam, in het bijzonder een specifiek, intiem element daarvan: tanden. Anderzijds vormt Donna Haraway’s essay A Cyborg Manifesto (1984) een ander belangrijk sleutelelement van TGMFS.

Voor TGMFS reisde Reynaud Dewar af naar Memphis, Tennessee. De strategisch gelegen zuidwestelijke stad ontwikkelde zich tot een belangrijke locatie van slavenhandel in de Verenigde Staten, om eeuwen later uit te groeien tot het centrum van de Civil Rights Movement. In de afgelopen jaren heeft de stad een belangrijke rol verworven in de hedendaagse rapcultuur. In haar film en performance onderzoekt Reynaud Dewar deze onderwerpen van civiele en stedelijke geschiedenis, en de objecten die daar onlosmakelijk mee verbonden zijn.

Vergelijkbaar met de stad Memphis heeft Middelburg zijn aandeel in de koloniale- en slavernijverleden van Nederland. Als strategisch gelegen haven was Middelburg een van de belangrijkste Nederlandse locaties voor handel en transport van tot slaaf gemaakte Afrikanen. Voor de tentoonstelling in Vleeshal Markt zal de kunstenaar een nieuwe film ontwikkelen, die ter plekke wordt geproduceerd. Tevens zal een nieuwe versie van haar performance plaatsvinden tijdens de opening op 24 juni, van 17:00 tot 20:00.

De tentoonstelling TEETH, GUMS, MACHINES, FUTURE, SOCIETY is een coproductie van Vleeshal, Museion in Bolzano en Kunstverein in Hamburg en wordt opgevolgd door een publicatie. voor meer informatie www.vleeshal.nl/agenda.

Voor ‘So You Don’t Get Lost in the Neighborhood’ nodigt Vleeshal steeds een andere Zeeuwse kunstenaar uit de rol van kompas op zich te nemen en het publiek mee te nemen naar plekken in Zeeland die voor hen interessant of inspirerend zijn. Op zondag 25 juni zal Dani Ploeger de kuststad Vlissingen gebruiken als zijn tentoonstellingsruimte en ons leiden langs verschillende werken die hij speciaal voor SYDGL#10 heeft aangebracht in de publieke ruimte.

Ploeger studeerde muziek in o.a. Den Haag en Berlijn. Tussen 2005 en 2007 woonde hij op de Westelijke Jordaanoever waar hij getuige was van het Israël-Palestina conflict. Deze ervaring werd een keerpunt in zijn loopbaan – Ploeger besloot om zijn carrière als muzikant te beëindigen en zich te richten op performance- en installatiekunst. Sindsdien maakt hij werk dat alledaagse electronica relateert aan maatschappelijke thema’s als geweld, sexualiteit en afval. Hij werkte o.a. met traditionele metaalwerkers in Caïro om tablet computers in staal in te pakken, reisde naar vuilnisbelten in Nigeria om uit Europa afkomstig electronisch afval te verzamelen, en nam schietles in Polen om met een Kalashnikov een gat in in een iPad te schieten.

Voor zijn rondleiding ontmoeten we elkaar om 14:00 bij het station van Vlissingen. Vervolgens gaat de tocht per watertaxi verder naar een bunker uit de Tweede Wereldoorlog en sluiten we af met een bezoek aan de plek waar al Ploeger’s ideeën vorm krijgen – zijn atelier in Willem3. Op elke plaats zal de kunstenaar kort uitleggen welk werk hij geïnstalleerd heeft en wat het verband is tussen deze specifieke locatie en zijn praktijk.

TGMFS has been programmed at Vleeshal Markt from June 24 onwards to coincide with the 8th Middelburg Decolonial Summer School, organized by the University College Roosevelt (UCR) from June 27 till July 13. This year’s Summer School will take place in Vleeshal Markt (a former meat market back in the days when the building was still the town hall). It will „explore decolonial horizons of living in harmony and conviviality. To do so it is necessary to unlearn dominant structures of knowledge and assumptions taken for granted about life, politics, nature, race and sexuality. The 2017 Summer School will be an exercise in shifting the geographies of knowing, sensing and believing.“

„Shifting the geographies of knowing, sensing and believing“ could be a description of Lili Reynaud Dewar’s art practice. In her work, Reynaud Dewar explores the sexual, racial and political conditioning and stereotypes that influence our cultural identity. She deliberately breaks with conventions and traditions in order to explore them and to create a space for thought in which the viewers can and must form their own opinions.

For TGMFS Reynaud Dewar traveled to Memphis. Due to its strategic location in the southwest of the United States, the city developed itself as a major center of slave trade, yet became the center of the Civil Rights Movement centuries later. The same streets that were the stage of trafficking and trade of enslaved people, became the backdrop of the historical 1968 Memphis sanitation strike, that preceded Martin Luther King’s assassination. In recent years the city plays a vital role in contemporary rap culture. In her film and performance piece, Reynaud Dewar explores these topics of civil and urban history and objects that have become intertwined with these narratives. Similar to the city of Memphis, Middelburg has its share in the history of colonialism and slave trading. As a strategically located port, Middelburg was one of the major Dutch locations for colonial trade and transport of enslaved Africans.

TGMFS revolves around two main themes. On one hand it explores the human body, or rather a particular, intimate element of it: teeth. In a film and performance piece set in Memphis, a city known for its racial and social conflicts, the artist explores stories, practices and identities that gravitate around grills, the teeth decorations that are a status symbol in rap and hip hop culture. Another key element of the show is Donna Haraway’s essay “A Cyborg Manifesto”, published in 1984. In this feminist essay, the cyborg functions as a metaphor for the dissolving boundaries between humans, machines and animals, which could possibly lead to a system and state that is no longer defined by gender, race nor class.

For the exhibition at Vleeshal Markt, the artist will produce a new film, to be shot at Vleeshal Markt. A new version of the performance will happen during the opening on June 24, from 5 till 8 pm.
